I am 13 years old and want to increase my height. I think yoga stretching exercises will be effective but most people tell me that it only improves our posture which makes us look taller. Is this true or is yoga really effective? if it is,then how much time should i spend each day doing it?

Yoga exercises promote increasing the area between the vertebrae, and could, I suppose, result in a slightly taller stature, as the bones are moved more into alignment and the vertebrae are not squashed on top of each other, but are more flexible and healthier.
In your case, though, just be patient. You have quite a few years of growing yet to do, and you will become taller over time. Just eat healthy, make sure you are getting plenty of nutrients (try to make junk food a rare thing) and your body is more likely to grow well. It’s true what mom and dad say about eating your veggies, they will make you grow big and strong! Honestly. It is what you put into your body to help it grow that makes it be it’s best.
Think of plants – if you just water one in plain potting soil, it grows, sure, but if you give another one nutrient rich compost, it’s going to grow twice as much and twice as healthy (if not more) than the one in regular dirt with only water.
Think of your body as a plant needing rich nutrients to help it grow. Feed it what it needs, get used to always eating healthy (fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes, lower fat, rare junk food) and you will look and feel better with more energy, and your body can grow right.
Take care of yourself, and yeah, yoga is still a great thing to do for yourself, most practice an hour a day, but you can still gain benefits from maybe 2 or 3 hrs a week. (every other day for example).
Good luck!

please answer if you know about YOGA.

please answer if you know about YOGA.
don’t give me other ways to lose weight.

please start doing Kaplabhati pranayam as advised by baba Ramdev in Aastha channel for 10 minutes daily

I don’t have a picture, so I will just describe the posture.
You are sitting on the floor with both legs wide apart and they are stretched. Your back is stretched upward. Both arms are stretched up alongside the ears. So your body shape is something like this ?
does anyone knwo the name of this yoga pose in English? it would be better if you have a picture.

When you sit with legs wide apart, but yet still not close to 180 degrees apart, in English it is generally known as Wide Angle Seated Forward Bend (in Sanskrit, Upavistha Konasana).

http://ashtangayoga.info/asana-vinyasa/primary-series/25a-Upavistha-Konasana-A.jpg

Upavistha = seated/sitting
Kona = angle
-asana = pose/seat

If you can accomplish legs 180 degrees apart (a "perfect" split), it can be called either Right Angle pose, or Equal Angle pose (Samakonasana).

http://www.yogaxtc.com/images/photos/ranjani_samakonasana.jpg

To my knowledge, there is no common English name that defines/describes either above pose with a given arm position, although, the following image was labled Samakonasana 2 (as in variation 2):

http://www.dharmayogacenter.com/_images/library/asanas/Samakonasana2.jpg

In my meager understanding of Sanskrit, you would probably just tack "Urdvha Hasta" on to the front.
Urdvha = upward
Hasta = hands

Thus "Urdva Hasta Upavistha Konasana" = Upward Arms Wide Angle pose;
…or "Urdvha Hasta Samakonasana" = Upward Arms Right Angle pose.

Namaste’,

i would like to know also your yoga routine and repetitions numbers. please help

I’ve read in magazines and online that while yoga is relaxing, it doesn’t help you lose much weight. Believe me, I’ve already tried! However, pilates works immensely! Well, it works if you do it often, which I don’t. But, you really do get great results when you do! Good luck!

Whenever I do yoga, my joints seem to get a little achy. And I’m not old, I’m not even 20. Is it because I’m locking my elbows and knees too much? Also, I’d like to know some of the health benefits of doing yoga regularly. Is it true that it helps your body get rid of toxins?

Thanks!

Yoga helps stimulate various glands, like your lymph nodes, which do help your body properly process out all the junk in your body.

As for your joints, it’s because they’re weak. Make sure that you are doing the poses correctly, and adjust them if you need to. Your body will adjust, just keep at it.

I’ve started doing yoga to try and make myself more flexible. I’d love to be able to actually touch my toes. I’m not overweight, or unfit, but I’m just not flexible. Can anyone recommend some yoga poses hat will make my back and legs more flexible?

Thanks :)

I don’t know if these are yoga posistions but they have helped me get more flexible. on your knees and legs straight out tward the back. bend back as far as you can. strech out your arms backward to help keep balance. this loosens up your back.

sitting on the ground put your legs straight out in front of you. reach as far as you can and if possible grab your feet/toes and hold that possision for a while. this also loosens up your back.

Lunges. Put one leg back and bend it as if you were knealing. BUT DO NOT let it tuch the ground keep your knee suspended at least 2-4 inches from the ground. Some people can do 1 inch but don’t tuch the ground. and keep your other leg out and bent. Keep your arms straight at your sides. keep this posistion for at least 60 seconds.

Lately I have been noticing my back and neck getting really tense, to the point that I need to crack it. If not, I feel this anxiety that if I dont crack it, its going to stress me out even more and the tension gets worse.
So im turning to yoga positions that may help.
If anyone knows of anything else that can help, dont hesitate posting it up here.
But if you can help me with some yoga techniques that can help relieve my back, neck, and just help me relax more, please let me know.
Thanks!

Instead of yoga positions, invest in a yoga mat, some time, and a few easy yoga tapes/DVDs that are easy to follow (Gaiam has some nice beginner yoga series).

A continuous flow of several positions are better to relax not only your back, but your whole body as well.

I always walk with my head down low, pretty much always have. Would like to have good posture, and not become a hunchback. I really need some good exercises or yoga to get my posture to how it should be.
what article are you talking about, Helen?

Standing is one of the important and beneficial yoga poses. This pose is helpful in aligning your body and your feet. It is also very useful in improving and maintaining a good posture. It is an advantage because if you have a bad posture, your backbones can be stretched and straightened without noticing it. Standing poses helps in giving strength to your legs and at the same time increase elasticity in your legs and hips because they are all connected to each other.

It has already been done 600 years ago at the Shaolin Temple.

Bodhiharma crossed the Himalayas from India barefoot and arrived at the Buddhist Shaolin Temple and noticing the monks were kinda flabby, devised a series of yoga exercises, both static and dynamic, which he taught to the monks. Essentially yoga exercises combined with kung fu kata, and thus Shaolin kung fu was born.

Also, if you look at the katas of Okinawan karate, which was derived from a style of kung fu, there are yoga-like elements within them. Even Okinawan San-Chin breathing exercises are strongly drawn from various yoga breath practices (such as found in Kudalini Yoga).

So the Asian martial arts have been influenced by Yoga for the past 600-800 years.

I am looking for the name of a yoga pose it is an inversion while standing with your hands…your legs are in the air and at the same time in the splits postition…The splits that are out towards your hips not frontward…I saw it at a convention and would like to practice it…Thanks for any help

In Sanskrit it is called adho muhka vrksasana (downward facing tree) in sama konasana (same angle). However, most people know adho mukha vrksasana as a basic handstand, normally practiced with your legs straight up. The variation that you describe shows the legs in a sideway split called sama konasana (normally done on the floor). The combination of both poses is simply what I have written above.

I want to decorate my personal yoga room with Indian tradition. And also I want to design the good ceiling and mirrors both front and back side.
So, Dear Yogis and friends I hereby requesting u to share ur precious ideas.

HI there,
usually, there is no direction by "hard and fast rule"…
but usually, as far as possible, we face "eastwards" ..thats supposed to be the most auspicious direction…
best wishes anyway….

so,i’m thinking of taking up yoga this year as a New Years resolution, and and i was wondering, what are the mental and physical benefits.I was wondering if there are any Yogi’s here,if it really does help with stress?

What other benefits are there?
Also,i understand there are different forms of Yoga,so each will have it’s own benefit, but i mean the overall benefits of Yoga.

Yoga benefits body, mind, and spirit.

Check out this site for yoga benefits.

What are the yoga poses that can increse my chances of conceiving?
can some one name those yoga postitions which will help me to get conceive.

Only know one which balances the hormones which of course is necessary to conceive.

Can’t remember the name but you lie on your back and push up into a shoulder stand (weight on the top of your back and shoulders) and then you adjust your hand grip so your thumbs are supporting your waist and slowly lower left leg until foot touches floor keeping your right leg pointing vertically upwards and your chin tucked onto your chest.
Hold for 4 breaths and then lower right leg then remove hands and bit by bit lower vertebrae from neck downwards until lying on back. Relx and release chin from chest.

I was just curious to know exactly how Yoga is "supposed" to work. Is it supposed to be a stretching session of ‘exercises’ or are you simply supposed to hold the position and breathe. Also, do different positions help trigger different effects and reactions from your body? Any insight would be great. =)

There are different styles of Yoga so it can vary. In general Yoga is about releasing tension by stretching and breathing. Part of this is when breathing slowly and deeply through the nose the body tells the muscles to relax allowing a deeper stretch. When the breathing is shallow and quick the muscles tighten and it makes it more difficult to stretch. In addition to the muscles Yoga also massages the internal organs so each pose has many different benefits. For example standing postures typically help with balance and posture but they can also put pressure on internal organs and glands. The nice thing is that all poses are supposed to balance the body and make it work the best that it can. yogajournal.com is a great resoure to tell you about the poses. Also if you wanted to try many different types of Yoga classes from your own check out Netflix they have a huge selection and it is a great way to see all different styles. And on the Oxygen channel there is a show called Inhale on at 6am that is a great Yoga class. Good Luck.

i work in a call centre and at the same time i do my MBA studies and hence would like to learn few Yoga exercises with which i can concentrate on my work n can also control my anger. I wanna have good memory power as well.

See below—>

I’m quite flexible, but it seems I can’t hold certain poses for a substantial length of time – like, say, Warrior 2 … Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated. THANKS!

with warriors particularly it is down to strength in the legs, and grounding. often people who are flexible are lacking in strength, and vice versa.

best thing to do would be to try and build up gradually, hold a little longer each time (measure the length of time by the number of breaths). it will come with practice.

also be aware on the contact between your feet and the floor, whilst you are in postures, imagine your feet being firmly rooted to the floor, and explore that connection.

I have been practicing the mayurasana yoga pose a.k.a. the peacock pose. I’ve held it for about ten seconds tops. But when i do it, it really hurts my wrists because i have to bend them back. Here is a picture: http://www.sanatansociety.org/yoga_and_meditation/images/gp_asana_mayurasana_jpg.jpg
Do you have any suggestions for me to keep my wrists from hurting? and type of bandages i can put around my wrists when I do this?

listen to your body..
if it hurts, STOP
else u mite hurt your wrist and wont b able to reply to these messages after all..
if its your wrist bone that’s hurting. avoid lifting weights, sleeping asanas which rely on the hands too much..
standing poses are better… do cardio activities that do not require you to rest your weight on your hands..
if it hurts for the next 3 days in a row, consult a doctor ASAP

Thanks! I am a yoga fanatic with extreme lower back pain. I may be doing my chatarangas (sp?) wrong..dunno…any suggestions?

You think you may be doing chataranga wrong—if you’re letting your lower back sag as you lower, that could hurt your lower back. Use your abs to hold your back straight as you lower. If that’s not possible yet, there is nothing wrong with modifying by putting your knees down.

Some other postures that would be good for your back are: bridge, chair, downward dog, cat/cow, and many others.

I know diet is also important, but as part of the physical side is concerned i’m kind of looking in Yoga and would like to know the benefits of Yoga and how you can lose weight with it (positions) and tone up your body etc.

Thankyou for any answers.

Yoga is one of the best healthy practice for man and woman. It keeps you fit and calm. Yoga is the natural cure for stress and high blood pressure. It’s amazing for your mind/body harmony achievement. And it tones your body and let you get in shape.

I get frequent migranes, and am stressed out a bit, yoga and meditation is supposed to be a way of stopping them, but i need a website that has relaxing calming positions for beginners
I want a website the does more of pictures than of having to read

http://www.yogajournal.com
click on the poses tab

there are pictures, but it is beneficial to read the instructions to be sure you are doing the pose properly. You can injure yourself if you enter into doing yoga without knowing the proper form and movement. You don’t just try to get into a pose that looks like the picture, you have to move your body appropriately to make sure the bones and muscles are in the right position and you don’t strain or injure yourself.
Also it is very important to focus on your breath. Long, slow deep breathing is best for any yoga positions, and you should never hold your breath.

Please take the time to read a bit and learn what you can, yoga really can help with your migraines, but only if done correctly.

good luck :)

Allopathic doctors say operate and solve the problem. How can it be treated through some yoga exercises?

I’m not sure about the yoga exercises, I’m sure there are some though. I do know that maya abdominal massage can help to correct a prolapsed uterus without surgery. MAM will help to guide your uterus back to where it needs to be and through Self Care you can help to retrain the ligaments to keep it where it needs to be. A classmate of mine shared her story of how she had a stage 2 prolapse and was able to correct it with MAM successfully, part of what inspired her to become a practitioner.

how long you have to keep each yoga posture? thirty seconds each is good?i do head stand for one minute.

It depends on the style of yoga you are practicing. Yin or Restorative asanas are held for several minutes. An active practice of vinyasa or power is meant to heat up your body and therefore the poses are not often held for very long. I tend to count breaths as opposed to seconds, and most poses I will hold for at least 5 full breaths. The headstand is fine for a minute and you can increase the time as your body becomes more adept. It is also good to allow your body about 10 minutes of savasana at the end of your practice.

so i’ve been doing yoga for a few weeks now and already notice that my flexiablity has increased drastically. my problem is that i want to start doing yoga on my own outside of a classroom setting but dont know how long i need to hold a pose. in class sometimes we hold a pose for a few minutes yet on other days we hold the same pose for only 20-40 seconds. i know each pose is different but is there some ballpark time i should be aiming for?

That depends on the posture itself

I’m thinking of taking up yoga, what are some health benefits of it?

I do a form of power yoga called YRG that is high cardio, low impact that increases flexiblity and builds your core. It will also help you increase your focus. I do the online version at home with no equipment needed and no monthly fees like a gym. Namaste

I have pretty sever lower back pain that is supposedly caused by a recently diagnosed case of scoliosis (my lower spin is wrenched to the left). What are good yoga positions for me to address this?

Depending of the severity of the scoliosis (an "S" shaped spine), you might want to ask your doctor.

I’m experiencing a pain in my right shoulder blade lately. Sometimes it extends towards my neck & upper spine. I presume it’s because of my Computer usage & my day long bike rides.
Anyways, I thought I could use some Yoga practice. But I can’t think of any proper yoga postures or exercise.
Could you suggest me some, that would be effective & won’t take much time to practice?

Google Yoga Exercises. There are hundreds of free sites.

i dont know what its called in the yoga terms but its the breathing technique where you hold your close one nostril and breath in and out of the other, that works for me.

I’ve been practicing basic yoga workouts from a yoga DVD and have considered participating in a class. I like all the poses I’ve learned thus far, but I’d like to know some of peoples favorite poses, the poses benefits, and why they enjoy yoga so much.

Thanks

Down dog, childs pose, tree and camel.
Yoga is relaxing, challenging and it makes you flexible. It centers me, and I enjoy doing it every day if I can. Joining a studio would be a good investment if you really enjoy it, but shop around, they can be expensive.

I have mild scoliosis and I’m doing certain yoga moves. But I was wondering if all yoga positions that work the spine are good for scoliosis and lengthening the spine. Or would certain postures worsen my back instead of help? I’m really not sure and need your help.

I used to do yoga and i have scoliosis, you must NOT do certain moves like this ones:

I stop doing yoga because i had a problem in my leg a year ago and i still have it!
Yoga is good for very healthy people…

I am doing 2 mile walk dvd each morning, and I would like to incorporate a little more into my work out. I am courious about yoga and pilates, what are the benefits of these two workouts? Thanks

They are each a little different.

Yoga will increase your balance, as well as challange your mental awarness and breathing awarness. Afterwards you feel refreshed, flexable and awake.

Pilates is a dancers workout. Its designed to strengthen your "core" muscles…mainly your deep abs. You wont notice a 6 pack right away, but you will feel it. The benefits are great, you start using the trunk of your body more instead of relying on your stronger legs and arms. Its a lot of sit up like movements.

Both are really easy for at home viedeos because you can get ones that dont require any extra equitment, dont require fast cardio movement, or really make you feel *too* silly (all videos make us feel somewhat silly, its part of the deal, lol)

I had chest surgery awhile ago and in lieu of physical therapy my surgeon said I should do yoga to help stretch out my upper body muscles.
What are some beginners poses/moves I could do?
And what do I first need to know/have before I start?
Links are helpful too :)

you may want to try a beginners yoga dvd.

Personally i would recommend going to a yoga studio and taking beginners classes there. This way the instructor can keep an eye on you. But once you get going – it saves time by having a beginners yoga dvd at home.

this site makes a recommendation for a beginners – i think most would be good if you do it step by step – careful not to over do it.

I have my period and my lower/middle back hurts… I am 12 and not so flexiable so any good yoga positions or something else besides pills because they don’t work much.

ooh hi! :)
I recommend putting ice on where it hurts
or something cold.
